I have been a professional
violinist for 25 years. I studied at the Royal College of Music with Rodney
Friend and Hugh Bean.
I started my career as a member of the 1st violin section in the BBC
National Orchestra of Wales where our principal conductors were Mariss
Jansons and Tadaki Ottacca and then went on to play with the Scottish
Chamber Orchestra under the principal conductorship of Sir Charles Mackerras.
I have been freelance since 1990 and have been lucky enough to work and tour
with the major orchestras in the country, such as the Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia, City of
Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool
Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish
National Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent
Garden.
I have performed with the original Royal Philharmonic Pops Orchestra, when
"Hooked on Classics" and "Proms in the Park" crazes first became popular and
went on to perform with many great classical artists such as Pavorotti, Jose
Carreras and Placido Domingo on their world tour of "The 3 Tenors", after
the world cup in the '90's, Bryn Terfel, Renee Fleming and Maxim Vengerov,
to name but a few. I have performed many times at the BBC Proms at the Royal
Albert Hall with many of these artists and orchestras and have also toured
extensively to venues all over the world in Japan, Korea, Russia,
Scandinavia, Europe, South America and the USA.
On a lighter note I have also worked, recorded and toured with artists such
as Johnny Mathis on his UK Tour, Richard Clayderman's Far East Tour to Japan
and Korea, Russell Watson and Catherine Jenkins. I've played on many film
tracks, most notably Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings and with many
session bands in Abbey Road, London and in shows such as Phantom of the
Opera and the Sound of Music and regularly with the BBC Concert Orchestra's
"Friday Night is Music Night". I've also performed at the Royal Palladium
with Shirley Bassey and then went on to play many shows with her at
glamorous venues in St Moritz and Monte Carlo.
I have settled and live in Birmingham and play with the City of Birmingham
Symphony 0rchestra and the Birmingham Royal Ballet orchestra.
I play on a Matthias Thir violin, circa 1788 |
